MMR Immunity & Booster Guidance

MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) Vaccine Information
Many patients have questions about whether they need an MMR booster. Please review the guidance below:
  • If you have documentation of two (2) MMR vaccines from childhood, you are considered immune and do not need a booster.
  • If you have documentation of only one (1) MMR vaccine, you may need an additional dose, depending on your risk factors such as:
    • International travel
    • Employment in healthcare
    • Attendance or work in a school or university setting
  • If you do not have any record of an MMR vaccine, we can order blood work (MMR titers) to check for immunity.
    • Coverage for this test varies by insurance plan. Please check with your insurance company prior to testing.
Insurance & Lab Information
  • CPT codes for MMR titers:

Important Note:
Individuals born before 1957 are considered immune and do not require vaccination or titers.
Those vaccinated before 1968 with a killed measles vaccine or an unknown vaccine type should receive at least one dose of live attenuated measles vaccine, as the killed vaccine used from 1963–1967 was ineffective.
