Hormone Replacement Therapy

Many women use hormone replacement therapy to relieve symptoms of menopause. Menopause occurs when a woman stops having menstrual periods. Menopausal symptoms may include hot flashes, and vaginal dryness. Hormone replacement therapy involves taking medication to replace the hormones that have decreased during menopause.

There are both benefits and risks to hormone replacement therapy. While hormone replacement therapy can protect women against osteoporosis, it may also increase the risk of stroke, heart disease and breast cancer. However, certain types of hormone replacement therapy have lower risk than others. It is very important to discuss the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy with your physician.
